Today, I’d like to introduce you to one of the most valuable resources available to designers and publishers alike - Microstock. I’m using it, most other designers use it as well for various purposes and you should probably consider using it too. But what is Microstock after all, why is it that important and how do people benefit from it?

Ikea Switches Typeface - Does it Devaluate Good Design?

This week, the third most printed publication in the world right after the Bible & Harry Potter hit the headlines of many respectable newspapers and the whole design community alike just by deciding to replace the typeface in their most recent annual catalogue.

IKEA said they required a font to reach out to customers worldwide in digital and print media and so decided to switch from famous Futura to Verdana - a font originally created by Matthew Carter for Microsoft back in 1996 primary for on-screen usage.

Since the launch of the third version of my website back in January, many things were going on and even though I intended to write new blog entries regularly, there was usually something which seemed to be more important or urgent for some reason. But now - even though my situation didn’t change at all - I think it’s about time to start writing again especially because there are a couple of things which might be useful for some of you & some I simply like to share just like that.

Great Article on FrooWeb

A nice article about the redesign process of my portfolio and some background information have been published on FrooWeb recently. The article as well as the blog itself are really interesting and absolutely worth reading it. FrooWeb is a community and blog dedicated to literally anything that could benefit a web designer so it’s great to see an article like this there.

Here’s an extract of the article:
All in all, this website is a GREAT example of how extraordinary ideas, principles of usability, and technical expertise can be combined to produce something that really stands out from the rest. After all, this is the “World Wide Web”, you have an endless amount of competition, most of which can throw a site together in a matter of minutes and call themselves a web designer. It takes hard work and dedication (as well as a bit of natural talent) to create the masterpieces that Maximilian has been generating lately..

Make sure to have a look at the blog right here to read the entire article.

7 Useful Apps For OSX Web Designers

Because of various requests I received lately and the irrefutable fact, that there are plenty of useful yet sometimes rather unknown applications available for OSX, I’d like to share some of my most vital pieces of software with you ordered by function below.

Image Editing - Photoshop CS3 / CS4
Even though there are some really promising approaches to create a real alternative to it, Photoshop was and still is one of those irreplaceable applications any professional web designer can’t get around yet. However, I’d like to put the spotlight on my personal runner-up which is Pixelmator, a project I kept an eye on from the very first release already. It’s not quite where it needs to be in order to seriously compete with Photoshop, but it’s beautifully executed, includes some sophisticated functions and already is really useful for some smaller tasks such as photo retouching for example.

Coding & FTP - Coda
Working on various kinds of source code are daily tasks for any web designer and so it’s definitely a plus to work with an application you feel comfortable with. This application is called Coda for me and is so much more than just a basic text editor - it literally includes anything you need to “grow beautiful code” according to their website. One of the features which is really time-saving and in my opinion truly outstanding is the integrated FTP client based upon their very own Transmit 3 engine - it’s just like editing code on a local system when you actually work directly on your web space.

The gardener selected me today

A really nice surprise has been waiting for me when I had a look at my eMails this morning - the guys from rgbgarden.com, which is an interesting css showcase and inspiration gallery, selected and featured my new website as “garden of the day” today.

Even though the third revision of indiqo.eu has been released just about a week ago it’s absolutely interesting what’s going on here since then, but most importantly I’m really glad that so many people seem to enjoy how it looks like now, at least the site has been featured in over 55 65 different CSS showcases meanwhile which is a great feeling I’m so thankful for.

Please let me know what you think or just read on in order to get a brief overview about all of the sites you can see and rate me on now.

More than three years passed by since I started working as a freelancing web designer, contributing to the new Subdreamer community back in these days. During this time, two websites served their purposes very well, but since version two was more than 1,5 years old, I thought it’s about time for something entirely new, something creative yet functional, a website which is really able to express my working philosophy and idea how modern web design should look like - visually and technically - and so here it is now.
